PAST MOSAIC EVENTS AND MEETINGS


2018-2019

Thursday, Sept. 13th, 2018 @ 8:30am:  Mosaic welcomed Billy Bean, Major League Baseball’s Ambassador for Inclusion. We learned about efforts to support LGBT+ community members throughout Major League Baseball and beyond.

Thursday, Oct. 11th, 2018 @ 8:30am:  Mosaic welcomed chemistry professor Christina Vizcarra, recent recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. She spoke about her experience and work as a woman in a traditionally male field.

Thursday, Oct. 18th, 2018 @ 6:00 pm in the auditoriumCommunity Service Night. HCCS students of all ages connected with service organizations seeking volunteers.

Thursday, Nov. 15th, 2018 @ 8:30 am: Alice Lombardo Maher, M.D.psychiatrist, published author, and founder of Changing Our Consciousness and Emotional Imprint. Dr.  Maher shared her ideas for how we parents can help implement tools to improve emotional literacy—the capacity to view the world through others’ eyes—in our schools, community spaces and homes. 

Saturday, Dec. 8, 2019 @ 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.:  PAAC Holiday party and service event. HCCS community members helped prepare and serve a meal to approximately 200 people who are homeless and living marginally.  Location: Manhattan Church of Christ, 48 E. 80th Street.

Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 @ 10:00 am: 

Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 @ 9:00 am to 1:00 pm: MLK National Day of Service.  HCCS community members helped prepare and serve a meal to people who are homeless and living marginally.  Location: Manhattan Church of Christ.

Monday, Feb. 11, 2019 @ 11:20 am (room 220): HCHS Diversity Committee meeting.

Wednesday, Feb. 13th, 2019 @ 8:30 am: Mosaic conversation in preview of the February 26th evening program featuring Tim Wise.  Attendees watched scenes from Episode 7 (107): Tsunami of Privilege of the America to Me series (set in Oak Park, Chicago) and discussed white privilege.

Tuesday, Feb. 26th, 2019 @ 5:45-8:00 pm (auditorium): Our Mosaic Black History Month evening program featured guest speaker Tim Wise , speaking on Understanding Race & Class Inequity: Privilege and Merit in Progressive Spaces. Program opened with a  dance performance by students from the HCHS African American Cultural Society.

Thursday, Mar. 14th, 2019 @ 8:30 am: Students from Feminist Future, the female-focused HCHS club, presented their research on the school-to-work transition for high-achieving women, followed by a guided discussion among HCCS parents and faculty . Click here for meeting minutes.

Monday, Apr. 1st, 2019 @ 11:20 am (room 220): HCHS Diversity Committee meeting. This month’s topic was Being a Black Student at Hunter. 
Thursday, Apr. 11th, 2019 @ 8:30 am: Mosaic welcomed Franny Choi, queer Korean American spoken word artist.
Friday, Apr. 12th, 2019 @ 8:30 am:  We followed up on our Feb. 13th viewing of scenes from America to Me, the powerful series that looks at the complexities of race, identity, privilege, and education through the eyes of a diverse group of high school students in Oak Park, Chicago. HCES Assistant Principal Eric Adissa joined us with updates on initiatives he’s leading with faculty and administration at the Elementary School, including engagement with Dialogue Arts Project (DAP).

Tuesday, Apr. 16th, 2019 @ 6:00-9:30 pm (Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing & Visual Arts, 215 West 114th Street): Collective Responsibility in Education. PS 452’s Diversity & Inclusion Initiative, in partnership with the Community Education Council for District 3, used the documentary series America to Me to prompt a discussion about race, education, and equity with a group of panelists that includes DOE Chancellor Richard Carranza, Columbia Teachers College Scholar Dr. Christopher Emdin, and America to Me series participant Dr. Chala Holland. 

Wednesday, Apr. 17th, 2019 @ 4:30-6:10 pm in the auditorium: Diversity in the Arts Program with Ballet Hispanico, America’s leading Latino dance organization. HCCS faculty, parents, and students of all ages participated in dance workshops led by rehearsal director Joshua Winzeler.

The 2017-18 school year’s events (with minutes) are listed below.

  • September 28th (Speaker: John Gentile) discussed white supremacy with a presentation titled “White Worries, White Fears”.
  • October 19th (Speaker: Michelle Lampach, Executive Director and Founder of UnLocal, Inc.) discussed their legal representation work focusing on serving immigrant youth and navigating DACA.
  • November 16th (Speaker: Maurice Sangodele-Ayoka) led a conversation on the topic of Toxic Masculinity. Mr. Sangodele-Ayoka is an education consultant who advises youth organizations on gender equity and healthy, progressive masculinity identity construction as a strategy for fostering resilience, academic achievement and leadership.
  • December 7th – Planning meeting
  • January 25th (Artist: Chloe Bass). Drawing on The Book of Everyday Instruction, her recent multiform project studying one-on-one social interaction, Chloë presented her work on the nature and implications of spending time together.  The 4th grade students attended.
  • Tues., February 27th, 6pm – Celebrating Black History.  Professor Jamal Joseph was our featured guest, sharing his experience as an American writer, director, producer, poet, activist, and educator. He is a former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kansas. He wrote five plays and two volumes of poetry to date and is a current professor and former chair of Columbia University’s film department. He is the artistic director of New Heritage Theater Group.
  • March 28th – honoring Women’s History month, this meeting featured two HCHS Feminist Future and Camfed.
