2016 BOOK FAIR

on Tue, 11/15/2016 - 21:56

Clear some space on your bookshelves -- HCES’ annual Book Fair is just around the corner! As in years past, the fair will be held the week after Thanksgiving; for 2016 that means our doors will be open from Tuesday, November 29th through Friday, December 2nd.

We are thrilled to announce that award-winning artist, illustrator and author Javaka Steptoe will be the featured speaker at our kick-off breakfast on Tuesday the 29th at 9am. Javaka is the author of numerous vibrant and richly textured books for children, the latest of which, Radiant Child (an exploration of the formative years of the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat), has received starred reviews from both Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus Review. Please join us for what is sure to be a riveting conversation!

Not only is the book fair the perfect place to add to your book collection, but it is also an easy place to buy gifts for family and friends! Below you will find the schedule for when each class is attending along with the hours it is open.  Feel free to shop with your child during their class’ dedicated time or stop in before or after school.

If your child will be shopping, send cash or check made out to HCES PTA.  Write your child's name and class on the check.  In the memo section of your check you may write 'not to exceed $ amount', in which case your child will get a receipt noting the amount spent.  You may choose instead to specify an amount on the pay line, in which case any amount outstanding after your child's purchase will be donated to HCES.  To make our volunteers’ job easier we round prices to the nearest dollar.

Credit cards will be accepted from adults only.

By the time the fair starts, classroom and specials teachers will have created their wish-list piles: books they have set aside because they'd like to include them in their class libraries. You may purchase these books as gifts for your child's teacher and indicate that the books are from your child (or your family) with a book plate on the inside front cover (provided at the time of purchase).

Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help pack up and unpack the library on Monday, November 28th and Friday December 2nd, respectively. Volunteers are also needed to help set up merchandise for sale, bag books and keep things organized, as well as help students check out.  If you are interested in volunteering, click here.

Many parents prefer to volunteer during a time slot that corresponds with their child's classroom visit to the Book Fair. Please review the schedule of class visits to the fair, listed below.

Used Books
Donation of gently used books is a wonderful opportunity to recycle books your child enjoyed but has outgrown, and ensures that no child leaves the fair without a book. And 100% of our secondhand book sales goes directly to the PTA fund.

We are looking for children's picture books, easy readers, chapter books (beginner and advanced) and current reference books. Please do not send board books or adult books --  those we can accept in the spring, for the Carnival Book Sale.

Donated books can be delivered to your child’s classroom teachers (with the bag clearly marked "Book Fair), or better still, left in the Library with Ms. Shostal.
